The retroreflective hummingbirds ( Aglaeactis ) are a genus of small hummingbirds that are native to the higher regions of the Andes . They reach a length of twelve to thirteen centimeters. The males are characterized by bright purple or malachite green dorsal and rump feathers. They inhabit the páramo , evergreen mountain forests and scrubland at altitudes of 2500 to 4300 m. Their diet consists of flower nectar and insects.
Systematics
There are four species found in Peru , Ecuador , Colombia, and Bolivia :
- Rusty Andean Hummingbird or Rosenschiller's Hummingbird ( Aglaeactis cupripennis ) - Distribution: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
- Red-breasted Andean hummingbird or common hummingbird ( Aglaeactis castelnaudii ) - Distribution: Huánuco , Pasco and Junín in central Peru.
- White-breasted Andean hummingbird , purple-backed hummingbird or purple -winged hummingbird ( Aglaeactis aliciae ) - Distribution: La Libertad , Peru
- Black-bellied Andean Hummingbird or Pamela Hummingbird ( Aglaeactis pamela ) - Distribution: Cordillera Real , Bolivia
