Aglianico del Vulture is a red wine from the Vulture area in Basilicata ( Italy ), which has been awarded the "Controlled Designation of Origin " Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) since 1971 . Since August 2, 2010, the Aglianico del Vulture Superiore wines from this area have had the higher quality level "controlled and guaranteed designation of origin" DOCG . The Superiore wines must have at least 13.5  % alcohol by volume .

Cultivation

The following municipalities have approved vineyards: Rionero in Vulture , Barile , Rapolla , Ripacandida , Ginestra , Maschito , Forenza , Acerenza , Melfi , Atella , Venosa , Lavello , Palazzo San Gervasio , Banzi , Genzano di Lucania .

On the slopes of Monte Vulture, the grapes are harvested very late because the Aglianico grapes ripen late. The vineyards are located at an altitude of up to 800 m and some of them are among the highest in Europe. The best qualities grow at an altitude of 250–500 m.

For 2016, the National Confederation of Wine Cooperatives (FEDERDOC) did not publish any production figures for the Aglianico del Vulture.

description

Depending on the storage time in barriques , a distinction is made between two quality levels: vecchio after 3 years and riserva after 5 years. Because of the similarities in taste and production, the Aglianico del Vulture is also known as the “ Barolo of the South”. There is also a sparkling wine variation of the DOC wine (Aglianico del Vulture Spumante ) . The best wines are complex, structured and long-lived; they can mature in the cellar for up to ten years.
