Ahatanhel Juchymowytsch Krymskyj (born January 3 . Jul / 15. January  1871 . Greg in Volodymyr-Volynskyi ; † 25. January 1942 in Kustanai ) was a Crimean Tatar - Ukrainian writer , orientalist and member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (since 1918).

Krymskyj, the son of a teacher, graduated from the Institute of Eastern Languages ​​in Moscow in 1892 . In 1896 he finished his studies at the historical-philological faculty of Moscow University . To improve his knowledge of Arabic , Krymskyi spent two years in Lebanon .

Krymskyj was a lecturer from 1898 to 1900, professor at the Institute for Eastern Languages ​​in Moscow from 1900 to 1918, and professor at the University of Kiev from 1918 to 1941 . He was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

He is the author of numerous works on the history and culture of the peoples of the East (mainly Arab countries , Iran , Turkey ). Particularly noteworthy is his contribution to the study of the language and culture of the Crimean Tatars , from whose people his father came. As one of the first orientalists in Russia, Krymskyj viewed the history of the East as part of world history .

Krymskyj was also active as a writer and published, among other things, the collection "Повести и рассказы" ( novels and stories , 1895), three volumes of poetry under the title "Пальмовые ветки" ( Palm branches , 1901–1922) and the novel " Andrei Андрев Андрев" , 1905). He was friends with the authors Iwan Franko and Lesja Ukrainka .
