Ahmad Fahd al-Ahmad as-Sabah ( Arabic أحمد فهد الأحمد الصباح, DMG Aḥmad Fahd al-Aḥmad aṣ-Ṣabāḥ ; also Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah ; * August 12, 1963 in Kuwait ) is a Kuwaiti politician and sports official .

Life

As-Sabah studied at Kuwait University and the Kuwait Military Academy. In 2000 he became Minister for Propaganda in Kuwait and was then appointed Minister for Energy.

Since 1992 he has been a member of the International Olympic Committee . As President, he heads the Olympic Council of Asia . After Kuwait failed to qualify for the 2007 Asian Cup, he verbally attacked the Australian national soccer team after they were group winners. In April 2012, As-Sabah succeeded the 33-year-old founding president of the Association of National Olympic Committees , Mario Vázquez Raña . He also manages the IOC Development Aid Fund. He is considered an important supporter of Thomas Bach in his election as IOC President in September 2013. His public support led to an investigation by the ethics committee shortly before the election.

In April 2015 he was elected to the FIFA Executive Committee and was also a member of the FIFA Council, which was created from it in February 2016 .

On April 30, 2017, he resigned from all positions within FIFA. Shortly before that, allegations of corruption had been raised against him: the president of the Guam Football Association , Richard Lai, had admitted in court that he had been bribed with US $ 950,000 and charged al-Sabah during interrogations.

On November 19, 2018, Al-Sabah announced that he would cease all offices within the IOC. He was therefore ahead of investigations by the IOC's ethics committee, which were pending in Switzerland in the face of a charge against As-Sabah for counterfeiting.

2000 awarded him the United States Sports Academy in Daphne the honorary doctorate .
