Ahmet Ünal

Ahmet Ünal (* 1943 in Uşak ) is a Turkish ancient orientalist .

Life

After elementary and middle school and secondary school ( lise ) in Uşak and Balıkesir , he studied at the Universities of Ankara and Munich : as major subjects Ancient History and Hittiteology , as minor subjects Assyriology , Near Eastern Archeology and General Linguistics, World History, Ottoman, Arabic and English and also attended a teaching college. After completing his doctorate in 1972 at the University of Munich , he took part in the Turkish excavations in Alacahöyük and Kuşsaray and led the excavations in Çengeltepe near Yozgat . From 1972 to 1974 he was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation . From 1974 to 1979 he was a research assistant at the Chair of Hittology at Ankara University . In 1975 he did military service as a lieutenant in the Jandarma . After completing his habilitation in 1979, he lectured in Ankara and was a visiting professor at the Selçuk Üniversitesi for ancient oriental, Greek and Roman history. From 1982 to 1985 he had a teaching position for Hittite and Hittite history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ; He worked on the DFG project Hittite Dictionary by Annelies Kammenhuber . From 1985 to 1988 he was a research fellow at the Chicago Hittite Dictionary Project at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago . From 1988 he taught as a professor of hittology at the LMU Munich and gave guest lectures at the universities of Bern , Adana , Konya and Antalya .

His main research interests are ancient Asia Minor studies, ie languages, history, historical geography and archeology of the second millennium BC. Chr .; Cuneiform and hieroglyphic Luwian , Palaic , Hattic , Hurrian and the languages ​​of the first millennium.
