Ajay Kumar Kakkar, Baron Kakkar (born April 28, 1964 in Dartford , Kent ) is a British medic , politician and life peer . He is Professor of Surgery and Dean for External Relations ( Dean for External Relations ) at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry of Queen Mary and Westfield College (January 2011).

life and career

Kakkar was born in Dartford, Kent in 1964. His father is the medical doctor Vijay Kakkar , Professor Emeritus of Surgery ( Surgical Science ) at the University of London and founder and former director of the Thrombosis Research Institute London. He attended Alleyn's Senior School ( Roper's House ) from 1977 to 1982 and was School Captain from 1981 to 1982. He later studied medicine at King's College Hospital Medical School, University of London. In 1985 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science . In 1988 he earned an honors degree as Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery . He received his Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1998 .

Kakkar was 1988-1989 Junior doctor ( House Physician ) and surgeon at King's College Hospital . From 1989 to 1992 he worked as an assistant doctor ( Junior Surgical Training ) in surgery. From 1993 to 1996 he was a Clinical Training Fellow of the Medical Research Council (MRC). He was then a Clinician Scientist Fellow there from 1996 to 1999 .

Kakkar was 1999-2004 Associate Professor ( Senior Lecturer ) in the subject Surgery and Surgery ( Honorary Consultant Surgeon ) at Hammersmith Hospital Imperial College London. At the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry of Queen Mary and Westfield College , he is since 2004 Professor of Surgery ( Surgical Sciences ) and since 2004 Specialist in Surgery of the Barts and the London NHS Trust . In 2006 he became a surgeon with the University College London NHS Foundation Trust .

His research interests lie in the areas of prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and thromboses that occur in connection with cancer , and in particular the role of antithrombotic therapy in life-prolonging measures in cancer and the role of serine proteases that affect coagulation in tumor biology.

Kakkar is Chair of the Clinical Quality Directorate of the University College London Partners Academic Health Science Partnership , Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute London since 2008 and teaches and publishes on his specialty. He has also worked with the National Health Service (NHS) on its strategy for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Membership in the House of Lords

Kakkar was named a Life Peer as Baron Kakkar , of Loxbeare in the County of Devon on March 22, 2010 and was officially inducted into the House of Lords on the same day . He's sitting there as a crossbencher . Terence Higgins, Baron Higgins , and Narendra Patel, Baron Patel , assisted him in introducing the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address on June 3, 2010.

Other offices

He has been Chairman of the Board of Governors of Alleyn's School in Dulwich since 2009, which he attended himself. He is also a trustee ( Trustee ) of the Dulwich Estate .

Kakkar is the director of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Foundation . There he is a member of the Executive Board & Council . He has also worked for Alleyn's School Enterprises Ltd , a trading subsidiary of Alleyn's School, and Dulwich Services Ltd , and the Frederick Hugh House School Trust .

He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Thrombosis Research Trust and of the London Pathway charity .

He also occasionally works on a fee basis for the pharmaceutical industry as a scientific consultant and expert in the field of thrombosis research; this included scientific activities for Aryx Therapeutics , Bayer Schering Pharma , Boehringer Ingelheim , Bristol-Myers Squibb , Canyon Pharmaceuticals , Ersai Inc , GlaxoSmithKline , Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis, among others .

Honors

In 1992 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons . Kakkar received the title of Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the David Patey Prize of the Surgical Research Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1996 . In 1997 he received the Knoll William Harvey Prize from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis . In 2006 he became a Fellow of the James IV Association of Surgeons . In 2009 he gave the opening lecture ( Welcome Lecture ) at the Royal Society of Medicine .
