The ARL - Academy for Spatial Development in the Leibniz Association is an independent legal institution under public law based in Hanover , which was founded in 1946. It is a member of the Leibniz Association and is subject to the supervision of the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture.

The ARL is an institution of supraregional importance and national interest, which deals with questions of spatial planning in Germany and Europe, offers scientific support and develops publications on the research area, some of which are also available directly on the website.

history

After the Second World War, the academy was virtually re-established as the immediate successor to the Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft für Raumforschung , established in 1935 . The last chairman of the Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft was Kurt Brüning , who, shortly before the end of the war, arranged for the institution to be transferred from Berlin to Göttingen and thus to continue its work. In 1947 the name was changed to "Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning". Kurt Brüning acted as its first president from 1947 to 1959 with Heinrich Hunke as general secretary.

On January 1, 1953, the academy was established by decision of the nds State Ministry granted the rights of a legal person under public law. State supervision is carried out by the state of Lower Saxony.

On December 18, 2019, the name was changed to "Academy for Spatial Development in the Leibniz Association".

Together with the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig , the Institute for Regional and Urban Development Research (ILS) in Dortmund , the Leibniz Institute for Ecological Spatial Development (IÖR) in Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research (IRS) in Erkner the ARL forms the spatial science network (5R) .
