The Akademik Fedorov made headlines when Russia claimed the North Pole area in August 2007 while the ship was near it. There the Akademik Fedorov and 100 researchers explored the Lomonosov Ridge using two research submarines in order to be able to assert any land or sovereign claims under the Convention on the Law of the Sea in the event that the underwater mountain range would have been a geological extension of Russian national territory .
Denmark claimed that the Lomonosov Ridge was a geological extension of Greenland , an autonomous part of Denmark, while Canada claimed that the Lomonosov Ridge was an extension of Ellesmere Island and therefore part of Canada.
