Alamania punicea

The orchid Alamania punicea is the only species in the genus Alamania . The plants grow epiphytically in oak forests in high altitudes of Mexico.

description

The barely thickened shoots stand on a creeping rhizome . Vegetative shoots with one to three leaves are formed, the inflorescences appear terminally on a separate, leafless shoot. Flowering time is from April to June, at the beginning of the humid season. The two to five resupinated flowers are close together. The flower color is a bright, warm red, the flowers glitter in the light. The diameter of a single flower is about 2.5 centimeters. The sepals and petals are shaped in the same way - lanceolate, pointed and pointing forward. The otherwise red lip is yellow at the base, here it is also fused with the column . The side lobes of the lip are very small and narrow. The column is yellowish-white and somewhat winged. The anther cap is dark red, it contains four pollinia . Hummingbirds are suspected to be pollinators.

distribution

Alamania punicea grows in the Mexican states of México , Michoacán , Puebla , Oaxaca and Veracruz at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters. It occurs as an epiphyte on the trunks and lower branches of oaks and occasionally on rocks. The climate there is characterized by a dry and cool winter period.

Systematics

Within the subfamily Epidendroideae , the genus Alamania is classified in the tribe Epidendreae . Alamania is closely related to Prosthechea and Artorima . Other related genera are summarized in the Subtribus Laeliinae .

Alamania punicea was described by La Llave and Lejarza as early as 1825 . Reichenbach put it to Epidendrum , but recent studies have shown that it is more closely related to prosthechea .

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Alamania punicea subsp. greenwoodiana Soto Arenas & R.Jiménez : It was first described in 2003.
  • Alamania punicea subsp. punicea .

Name declaration

The generic name Alamania honors Lucas Alamán (Lucas Ignacio Alamán y Escalada) (1792 - 1853), a Mexican natural scientist (mineralogy, chemistry, physics, botany), historian and politician. The specific epithet puniceus means "purple red" and refers to the color of the flowers.

Culture

The plants are occasionally cultivated for their beautiful flowers. The roots must be able to dry off quickly, dry substrate - but not dry air - is necessary during the rest period.
