Alan Morgan (Bishop)

Alan Wyndham Morgan (born June 22, 1940 in Swansea , South Wales , † October 24, 2011 ), OBE , was Bishop of Sherwood in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham of the Church of England from 1989 to 2004 .

Life

Morgan was the son of AW Morgan. In his youth he attended Gowerton Elementary School, the Gowerton Boys' Grammar School (now the Gowerton Comprehensive School ). He later completed his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and History at St David's College in Lampeter , which is now part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and then studied at the Theological Seminary at St Michael's College in Llandaff ( Cardiff ).

He was ordained a deacon on July 25, 1964 by the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, John Thomas, in Brecon Cathedral , and in 1965 he became a priest . He began his ecclesiastical career in the Anglican Church as an assistant pastor with curates in Llangyfelach and Morriston, Cockett and Coventry . Subsequently, he became parish pastor (English team vicar) of St. Barnabas in Coventry in 1972 and in 1978 "Bishop's Officer for Social Responsibility" of the Bishop of Coventry , John Gibbs .

From 1983 to 1989 he was Archdeacon (Archdeacon) of Coventry .

The Archbishop of York , John Habgood , consecrated him on 21 September 1989 at York Minster to Bishop . Morgan followed Dick Darby as Suffragan Bishop of Sherwood in the Episcopate and manage 15 years diocese. In 2004 he retired; Tony Porter followed.

At the national level, he was Chairman of the Social Responsibility Working Group on the Board of Directors of the General Synod of the Church of England. This working group published a report in 1995 entitled "Something to Celebrate" on the future of the family. He was also a member of the "Coalfields" working group and later continued his work as chairman of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust; the foundation looks after the needs of former coal mining regions in the UK .

Morgan had been married to Margaret Patricia Williams since 1965 and had a son and daughter.

Awards

In the year of his retirement, the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams honored him with the "Cross of St. Augustine" (named after Augustine of Canterbury ) in recognition of his services to the Anglican community . In 2005, Morgan was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
