Alberich I of Utrecht († August 21 or November 14, 784 ) was Bishop of Utrecht from 777/778 . He is a saint of the Catholic Church.

He was a great-grandson of Abbess Adela von Pfalzel . To what extent he descended from the Merovingian family or whether he had Anglo-Saxon ancestors cannot be proven with certainty. Possibly he belonged to the Hugobertines .

Alberich was a monk in the Benedictine monastery of St. Martin in Utrecht . In 775 he traveled to Italy on behalf of Charlemagne . Shortly after his return, Abbot Gregor von St. Martin, who was also von Alberich's uncle, died. Alberich succeeded him as abbot. Like his uncle, he was also a curator of the Frisian Church, whose bishopric was vacant. In 777 or 778 he was ordained bishop of Utrecht in Cologne .

As a result, the Frisian church broke away from the old Anglo-Saxon ties and was transferred to the Franconian church system. The diocese of Utrecht was recognized by the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Bishop Alberich promoted the mission among the Frisians . He systematically destroyed pagan places of worship in his sphere of influence. He sent Liudger (later Bishop of Munster ) to the Ostergau . Alberich had the church in Deventer rebuilt through him .

Alberich was interested in the sciences. He was friends with Alcuin , among others . In his area of influence he reformed the cathedral school in Utrecht.

In Sustern his remains are venerated as relics . Its feast days are November 14th, March 4th and August 21st.
