Gregory of Utrecht
Gregory of Utrecht , and Gregory of Pfalzel , (* around 707 / 708 in Trier , † 25 August 775 or 776 in Utrecht ) was a missionary and abbot The partially attributed to him the office of. Bishop of Utrecht he has not officially occupied, although he administered the diocese. He is venerated as a saint .
Life
Gregor came from the noble Franconian family of the Hugobertines and was educated at the court school. He was a grandson of Adela , the founder of a women's community in Trier-Pfalzel . In 721 he joined Boniface there as a youth . With this he went on mission trips to Thuringia and Hesse . He also followed him to Rome in 737/38 . Boniface saw in him around 742 his successor as organizer of the church in the Franconian Empire . It did not happen, probably because of differences with the Carolingians. His brother is said to have been involved in a crime against the Carolingians .
In 747 he became abbot of the St. Martin monastery in Utrecht. From 754 after the death of Boniface he was head of the mission among the Frisians . Although he is considered the Bishop of Utrecht, he actually did not hold this office nominally. Officially, this office was held by one of his assistants, an Anglo-Saxon by the name of Alubert, although Gregor was actually in charge. In Utrecht he founded and directed the cathedral school . One of his students was the later Bishop of Munster Liudger . Gregor dedicated a memory book to this with the title Liudgeri vita Gregorii abbatis Traiectensis.
Gregor was buried in Susteren Abbey near Maastricht . The relic of his head has been in an underground treasure chamber in the immediate vicinity of the St. Amelberga Church ( Basilica minor ) in Susteren since 1997 . A bust from 1885, which is hollow inside, serves as a relic holder. His skull is kept in the cavity. In addition, there are bone relics from him in the outer crypt of the church.
His general Catholic and Protestant feast day is August 25th. He is commemorated on August 26th in the Diocese of Trier and on November 8th in the Diocese of Utrecht. The merchant church in Erfurt is consecrated to him. The local primary school in Trier-Pfalzel is named after him.
