Albert Juan Aguayo , also Alberto Juan Aguayo (born July 16, 1934 in Argentina ) is an Argentine- Canadian neuroscientist . He is best known for his work on the regenerative capacity of the nervous system .

Life

Aguayo graduated from the National University of Córdoba in Argentina with a degree in medicine in 1959 . He worked as an intern in neurology at the University of Toronto and McGill University before going to the UK on a McLoughlin fellowship for a research visit in 1966 .

In 1967 Aguayo received a first professorship (assistant professor) in the department of neurology and neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal . He mainly dealt with basic neurobiological research. In 1977 he received a full professorship. Aguayo was Director of McGill 's Center for Research in Neuroscience at the Montreal General Hospital Research Institute from 1985 to 2000 .

Aguayo was President of the Canadian Association of Neuroscience and the Canadian Neurological Society , the Society for Neuroscience , based in Washington, DC (1987). He was Scientific Director of the Canadian Neuroscience Network and President of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) based in Paris (2006–2008). Aguayo published more than 150 original papers and was co-editor of 26 scientific journals .

Act

At McGill University, Aguayo and colleagues were able to show that nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord of adult mammals - contrary to the previous doctrine - are very well able to grow and establish new functional connections after an injury or illness. Aguayo also studied the conditions under which the regenerative potential of nerve fibers can be improved and the chemical and cellular factors that promote successful cell growth in the brain, eye and spinal cord.

Awards (selection)

Since 2010, an Albert Aguayo Lecture has been held annually at McGill University in Montreal as part of an Albert Aguayo Conference .
