Albert Delstanche

Albert Delstanche (born May 8, 1870 in Brussels ; † July 6, 1941 there ) was a Belgian painter , graphic artist and illustrator .

Life

Delstanche grew up as one of six children of the doctor Charles Delstanche (1840-1900) and his wife Marie-Hélène Caroline Mélanie, née Madou (1845-1882), a daughter of the painter Jean-Baptiste Madou , in Brussels. At the age of 17 he went to Düsseldorf for a school year in 1886 , where he received very good grades in the elementary class of the Royal Prussian Art Academy under Heinrich Lauenstein . He also attended the Académie des Beaux-Arts in his hometown. There he was a student of Alexandre Robert (1817–1890) and Joseph Stallaert (1825–1903). At the Free University of Brussels , he studied law and received his doctorate in 1891 for Doctor of Law . In 1894 he began working as a freelance artist in Brussels. In the following year he married Madeleine Vanderborcht. In 1904 he got a job in the graphic cabinet of the Royal Library of Belgium . In 1907 he printed his first etchings . In 1908 he went on a study trip to Italy . Around 1910 he gave up the post at the library. During the First World War he lived in London , where he created the illustrations for Émile Verhaeren's book The Little Towns of Flanders , published in 1915. In 1929 he settled in Ohain , Province of Brabant . In 1940 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the graphics department of the Beaux-Arts class of the Académie Royale de Belgique .
