Albert Jele

Albert Jele (born April 29, 1844 in Innsbruck ; † October 13, 1900 there ) was an Austrian art historian . From 1874 to 1898 he was director of the Tiroler Glasmalereianstalt , which enjoyed a great boom under him.

Life

Albert Jele was born in Innsbruck in 1844 as the eldest son of the painter Caspar Jele and his wife Anna. He graduated from the state high school in Innsbruck with honors and attended his father's drawing school on Sundays. After graduating from high school, his father took him on a trip to see the art treasures in Munich .

Since at that time only the art history of antiquity was taught at the University of Innsbruck , but not the later epochs, Jele enrolled in classical philology . He also studied at the universities of Münster and Vienna and received his doctorate in philosophy in Innsbruck in 1867.

Jele learned French and English, including during longer stays in Lausanne and England, as well as Italian and Spanish. During major trips to Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Italy, he dealt with history and art history and prepared for a lectureship.

In 1861 Albert Neuhauser , Josef von Stadl and Georg Mader founded the Tyrolean glass painting company. After Neuhauser withdrew for health reasons, Albert Jele followed suit and became director in 1874. Under his leadership, the glass painting company took off rapidly and received orders from all over Europe and North America. In 1880 he founded a branch in Vienna. Albert Jele was an art collector and donated a number of works to museums, especially the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum , which made him an honorary member.

In December 1868 he married Angelika Streiter (* 1830), a daughter of the Bolzano mayor Joseph Streiter . After his father left the company, the son Fritz became a partner in the Tyrolean glass painting establishment for a short time.

1898 Jele pulled back from the line of stained glass institution, on October 13, 1900, he died of lung and pleurisy .
