Joseph Streiter (born July 4, 1804 in Bozen ; † July 17, 1873 at the Unterpayrsberg mansion , Bozen) was mayor of Bozen and a member of the Tyrolean state parliament . In the Kulturkampf he was considered an exponent of the progressive liberals.

Life

Joseph Streiter came from the Bolzano patriciate . His parents were Bernhard Dominikus Streiter and Louise von Tschiderer. His father died in 1809, his uncle Johann Nepomuk von Tschiderer (from 1835 Prince-Bishop of Trento) influenced his upbringing.

After a private education by private tutors, he first attended the Franciscan high school in Bolzano, then the Benedictine high school in Merano . Before completing his law studies at the Universities of Innsbruck and Padua ( doctorate in 1828), he married the Innsbruck doctor's daughter Johanna Holer in 1827. From this marriage there were six children.

Since access to the legal profession was limited - one could only become a lawyer if law firms became vacant due to illness, death or voluntary resignation - Streiter first had to work in Cavalese before a legal position became available in Bolzano. There he worked as a lawyer for 24 years.

On October 1, 1837, his wife died at the age of only 35. In 1845 he married his long-time housekeeper Anna von Kapeller. Streiter lived on the estate he inherited from his father, the Unterpayrsberg estate in Zwölfmalgrie .

From 1850 to 1860 he was head of the municipality of Zwölfmalgrei, and from 1861 mayor of Bozen. From 1870 to 1872 he was a member of the Tyrolean state parliament. His struggle has always been directed against ultramontane clericalism and the restriction of free expression by censorship . The Bolzano Festival of Lights on November 10, 1861 marked a high point in the Tyrolean culture war .

Streiter was also active in literature and wrote numerous poems. The Albert Stolz painting Dr. Joseph Streiter and his circle of friends in the basement of the Bozen town hall shows him with Jakob Fallmerayer , Adolf Pichler , Vinzenz Gredler , Franz Defregger , Ignaz Zingerle , Gustav Seelos , Walpurga Schindl and Viktor von Scheffel .

Fighter is the Dr. Streiter in the Bolzano city dedicated to the north of the arcades runs. In addition, a settlement in Oswaldweg, which belongs to Streiter's former municipality of Zwölfmalgrei, is called "Streitergarten".
