Life

Construction plan of the Vincentium by Josef von Stadl

Josef von Stadl was born in Steinach as the son of the innkeeper and farmer as well as several times mayor of Steinach and later member of the state parliament Ignaz von Stadl. He attended elementary school in Steinach and Matrei am Brenner and, from 1841, the normal model secondary school in Innsbruck . From 1843 on, he drew building plans as an autodidact and was engaged in woodturning and locksmith work.

In 1848 he joined the Steinacher voluntary sniper company, where he met the sculptor Michael Stolz . Through his agency, he became an employee of the architect Vinzenz Statz in Cologne in 1852 . However, due to illness, he had to return home after a few months. After the great fire in the village in 1853, he was entrusted with the reconstruction of the church, Widum and school house in Steinach. This first major order was followed by numerous other orders for church building and renovation, cemetery facilities and public and private secular buildings. His designs were mostly in the neo-Romanesque style , sometimes also in a neo-Gothic style based on the early Gothic .

In 1861 he founded  the Tyrolean Glass Painting and Mosaic Establishment with Albert Neuhauser and Georg Mader  in Sterzing , for which he planned the factory buildings after they moved to Wilten in 1869/70. In 1881 von Stadl left the company. In 1878 Josef von Stadl was appointed diocesan architect by Bishop Vinzenz Gasser of Bressanone and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Papal Order of St. Gregory .

From 1865 von Stadl lived in Innsbruck. In 1867 he married Maria Pfefferer (1839–1909) from Bruneck , a history painter trained in Munich. The son Peter von Stadl also worked as a builder and architect.
