Next to the church there is a memorial chapel at "Noble Benedict Knights of Vintschgau" of Merano , which on 15 June 1885 when crashing the of times coming Stellwagen came the Imperial and Royal Mail to death here. The chapel was built by his grieving wife, as a plaque above the front door says. Pastor Nikolaus Ortner from Laas, who was a great admirer of Mary, supported the widow after his return from a pilgrimage to Lourdes in her endeavors to build a chapel in honor of the Immaculate Mary of Lourdes in memory of her husband . She could on August 7, dedicated and a statue of "Lourdes mother" are used ceremonially. After word got around that at least answers to prayer or even miracles should have taken place here, so numerous people made pilgrimages to the chapel that it soon became insufficient.

church

Pastor Ortner took the initiative to build a larger house of God and made a written appeal “to all pious admirers of Mary” with a request for a donation. It is the first Lourdes pilgrimage church in all of Tyrol - if not in Austria .

The foundation stone was laid on October 17, 1893 with the help of the abundant incoming funds . It was celebrated in the open air by Pastor Ortner and 13 other assisting clergymen. A neo-Romanesque building with a round bell tower on the east side was planned. It was built by master mason Stecher from Prad , who had also built the Sacred Heart Church in Tanas . The production of the altars was entrusted to the master carpenter Fleischmann from Schlanders . On September 1, 1896, the three bells were consecrated and on September 1 of the same year the church was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Eugen Karl Valussi. The statue of the Mother of God was transferred to the new church in a solemn procession in the presence of numerous priests, whereby, as the "Tiroler Bote" reported, "an enormous crowd" was present.

The figure of the Virgin, which was transferred from the chapel after the completion of the church, was replaced by a Pietà from the Laas cemetery chapel.

In the years 1975/1976 an extensive interior and exterior renovation took place, water and electricity were connected. In 1983 the sacristy and presbytery were renewed and the popular altar was erected.

The annual number of visitors is between forty and fifty thousand people.

inner space

Pulpit, confessionals, side altars and high altar with Lourdes grotto

The interior of the church is kept simple and based on the neo-Romanesque style. The nave has a flat coffered ceiling, there are two confessionals on the long walls, and the two side altars are also simple. Above the altar tables there is a figure of St. Joseph of Nazareth and St. Anthony of Padua . On the east side there are three windows, the glass of which is decorated with tendrils and floral ornaments. The windows originally showed the names of the donors, but these parts in two windows have been broken and replaced with normal glass. For this reason only the name of the Pegger family is available. The four windows on the west side show a cycle of pictures from the life of Mary . A representation of Lourdes can be found in the central arch of the choir above the high altar. It is a stalactite grotto made from Lasa onyx . Above the portal to the entrance hall, Our Lady of Lourdes with the kneeling girl Bernadette can be seen again on a marble relief .

In the vestibule, many votive tablets and gifts testify to frequent answers to prayer.
