The St. Remigius branch church is located in the Eyrs fraction in the municipality of Laas in South Tyrol's Vinschgau . It is located just outside the town center on Tanaser Weg.

Predecessor churches

Old documents speak of a first church in Eyrs, dedicated to St. Bartholomew and St. Kastulus was consecrated. The church and the village were destroyed by a mudslide , no further information is known.

The Successor Church , dedicated to St. Remigius was consecrated because a portrait of him was found while digging the foundations, is mentioned for the first time in 1416. It stood "right at the foot of the mountain" on the opposite side of the Tanas brook, which was probably the reason why it was very difficult or impossible to get to it in winter. A document dated July 19, 1457 reports that Bishop Leonhard von Chur confirmed the foundation and establishment of a perpetual mass and chaplaincy to supplicants from Eyrs , since a consecrated church with a cemetery already exists in Eyrs and a visit to the parish church of the Birth of Mary in Tschengls is sometimes unreasonable be. Several times it is reported that the church or the altars have been rededicated, which suggests severe damage or even destruction caused by mudslides.

In the visitation log of 1638 it can be read that the church had three altars, was medium in size and had a high vault . The panels of the high altar show Saints Remigius, Sebastian and Nikolaus . The right side altar was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary , St. Peter and St. Bartholomew. The left side altar was dedicated to St. Dedicated to Nicholas.

The service was held here until 1806 , after which, due to the difficulty of walking on the working days, people turned to the St. Joseph's Chapel belonging to the Verklayer family . Until 1924, the church in Tschengls had to be visited again for the Sunday service. Since Eyrs was only a branch of the parish of Tschengls, the pastor there was only obliged to hold Vespers and a Holy Mass with a sermon on certain festive days in St. Remigius . The early knife from Tschengls had to read mass twice a week and on the 3rd Sunday of the month.

In 1831 a mudslide destroyed the church so permanently that the Eyrser were later forced to abandon the building. It is mentioned again in a protocol from 1845, in which it is recorded that Johann Parth was rewarded for clearing the church of rubble and earth.

Today's church

The new church was built in a relatively short time. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1852 and already on 23 September 1853 could by Prince Bishop John Nepomuk Tschiderer dedicated to be. Given the modest financial resources available, the church was built in a simple style. As far as possible, the material and interior fittings of the demolished previous church were used.

Between 1983 and 1986 the church was restored inside and outside by Pastor Sebastian Innerhofer and the two-storey gallery was expanded.

The patronage is celebrated on October 1st, but the actual church day is January 17th, the day of Saint Anthony Abbot.

In 1968 Eyrs became an independent parish. However, after Pastor Innerhofer, who came to Eyrs as a chaplain in 1966, retired, the position was no longer filled and Eyrs was incorporated into the parish of Laas.

Building

The facade tower with a low pyramid and corner attachments dominates the church building. The high arched windows are decorated with a baroque carpet pattern from the “Tiroler Glasmalereianstalt” in Innsbruck . Although there were designs for it, the church was not painted. The current ceiling paintings are from 1935 and are signed “Rob. Strasser ”signed. They show the baptism of King Clovis by St. Remigius and the Heart of Jesus in the choir room . At that time, the interior was also renovated, in which the wood paneling and the ornamental painting were added.

The altars were taken from the old church and date from the 17th century. The two late Gothic figures of St. Nicholas and St. Remigius on the high altar are believed to date from 1520. The baroque structure of the high altar is still in its original state, while the pedestal , altar table and the free-standing tabernacle were rebuilt around 1906 by the Fleischmann brothers from Silandro based on a design by the painter J. Valtingojer. The two altar panels listed in the visitation protocol are no longer available, their whereabouts are unknown. The sheet of the high altar depicts the adoration of the shepherds and has no connection with the church's patronage. It probably comes from an abandoned monastery or was taken from another sacred building. It was created at the beginning of the 18th century by the baroque painter Ulrich Glantschnigg from Hall in Tirol .

The excerpt from the high altar shows a rare scene from the story of St. Nicholas. The bishop brings the young man Adeodatus, gripped by the hair, to his father's home. It comes from Florian Greiner from Schluderns . The leather altar attachment for the old church was also painted by him in 1780. He shows St. Remigius raising a dead man.

The high altar is flanked by sculptures of a Guardian Angel and the Immaculate Mother of God. Both figures were created around 1850. In the back of the nave there is a baroque statue of St. Nepomuk , which was brought here from a wayside shrine at the “Kirchwiesl”, and a statue of Joseph that was given to the church by Alfons Gamper from Müllerhof. Possibly it comes from Christian Greiner the Elder. Ä. from the time around 1700 and comes from the abandoned St. Joseph's Chapel. A. Isera painted the picture of the China missionary Josef Freinademetz in 1982.

Left side altar

The left side altar is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Anthony Abbot and was painted by the Franciscan Father Cajus d'Andree from Bozen in 1878. In the extract above there is a copy of the Mariahilf picture by Lucas Cranach , which was probably painted when the altar was made. On the left side altar are the statuettes of St. Vitus as a gable figure, with St. Rochus and Anthony of Padua . The right side altar shows a female figure ( St. Lucia  ?), John the Baptist and Francis of Assisi . The figures date from around 1640. There is no agreement among experts about the artist.

Parts of the pulpit are baroque. They have been taken over from the old church. The same applies to a late Gothic font made of white marble that is in the cemetery today. It is decorated with net ridge patterns and three symbolic heads.

organ

The organ also came from the old church and was replaced in 1907 by a new instrument by Franz Reinisch from Steinach am Brenner . This was overhauled in 1992.

Bells

The tower has five bells .

  • The smallest was cast in 1764 and shows reliefs with the Holy Family , a cross and another saint. It probably comes from the abandoned St. Joseph's Chapel; today it serves as a death bell.
  • Two bells were cast by the Colbacchini company in Trento in 1922.
  • In 1988 the Grassmayer company in Innsbruck manufactured two more bells.
  • The oldest, from 1662, originally hung in the previous church and was cast by Hans Schelener from Latsch . It is decorated with a cross and the names of the evangelists . She has since been taken down.
