Ortisei in Tarnell

The Church of St. Ulrich is located on Nördersberg in the Tarnell fraction of the municipality of Laas in Vinschgau ( South Tyrol ). It is in the immediate vicinity of the Lazarushof, whose residents were also involved in the construction.

Building history

The creation is shown on a marble plaque above the entrance:

"This church was paused in 1842 and the good Grunth and the beginning of this church was the venerable Martin Tappeiner pastor in Laas"

Even if St. Martin is placed in the foreground several times, the church is consecrated to St. Ulrich.

At the instigation of pastor Martin Tappeiner from Unterloretzhof in Hungergasse in Laas, construction of the church began. The residents of Tarnell were called upon to build their own small church in their remote mountain hamlet . The men of the farm community carried out the work themselves with considerable expense and effort.

The brick turret ( roof turret ) with onion dome and triple weather cross is not commonplace . A blackboard reads:

"Here you can read
who these men have been
and have pauth this church
and looked at no cost.
Johann Rapp den grunt to
Tamann Walter - Ignaz Plazer - Michel Mösmer - Mathies Papperion - Kristian Rapp - Martin Parth - Martin Kurz - Peter Fent - Florian Kurz
Sanct Martin you as Shuz patron
we dedicate this little church to the tr (ohn) "

Some of the farmers listed above could be assigned to a farm::

  • Mathies Papperion from Egghof
  • The Rapp family from the Koflhof
  • Michael Mösmer from Obertarnellhof
  • Martin Parth vom Rungghof (formerly called Draxl)
  • Martin Kurz from Lazarushof
  • Florian Kurz from Tanashof (unsure)
  • Martin Platzer as donor of the Way of the Cross and who also took over other costs, as it is noted on a marble slab on the north side. On this board, St. Martin mentioned as patron saint:
Marble slab north side

“Holy martin consolation of the poor
you wölt dornell to the patron saint
through you we beg to spare you in
front of the highest throne fridenn
you donate on earth
and the hell you pothst you truz

his family on plaz: the chalice Maria Klozin "

The adoration of the Tarneller for St. Ulrich is attested from earlier times. The pastor Simon Tröger noted in 1722:

“On St. Ulrich's day, the neighboring plowed on Tarnell ain h. To have the votive Möss solved and pay 30 kr.
On St. Ulrich's Day, the neighborhoods on Tarnell tend to have a holy votive mass read and pay 30 kreuzers for it. "

Interior decoration

altar

The interior of the church is kept simple, but the existing decorations testify to the pride of the builders. The two statues of St. Martin and St. Ulrich, the latter flanked by two angels , date back to the 18th century. In a niche on the north wall there is a wooden sculpture depicting a man of sorrows , which can be dated to the 18th or 19th century. The side of the altar with columns construction and scrolled gables , two warriors with flag, where it could be around St. Florian and St. Moritz. Some time ago two frescoes of the original painting were uncovered on the north and south walls. One shows St. Mary with child and the other St. Joseph with lily and the baby Jesus.

On the altar is holy Martin presented with the beggar. The pastor Tappeiner may have wanted his patron saint as patronage , but ultimately the church was consecrated to St. Ulrich, whose figure is on the altarpiece, which is why the church day is always celebrated on July 4th.

The Stations of the Cross are prints with Italian text. They come from Luigi Agricola and were donated by Mathies Platzer in 1842. Two small bells hang in the turret with the arched windows . The larger one was cast by Luigi Colbacchini in Trento in 1925 . It is decorated with reliefs showing figures of saints, crucifixes and other decorations. The smaller one has no year and no name of the founder. It only has heraldic reliefs with four saints. The decorations on the window arches, the triumphal arches and the marble panels were refreshed during the restoration from 2010 to 2011. The restoration work also included draining the external masonry and covering the roof with new wooden shingles .

In gratitude for their successful return home, the soldiers of both World Wars from Tarnell attached their medals to the statue of St. Martin.
