The pilgrimage church of the Birth of Mary is located in the Tschengls fraction in the municipality of Laas in South Tyrol's Vinschgau . It is located in the center of Tschengls.

history

Tschengls was once a not insignificant parish, to which the churches of Eyrs and Tanas belonged as expositions . On Sundays and feast days as well as for 40-hour prayer and during Holy Week, the believers there had to come to Tschengls for worship. The clergy of the two branch churches had to support the pastor of the birth of the Virgin Mary in holding confession , with sermons and other church activities.

From documents in the episcopal archive in Chur can be seen that there is a already in the period before 1500 here pilgrimage to the "Mother of God in Tschengls" has given and for this reason, a church must have been present.

The present church was built in 1510 to "honor of the glorious Virgin Mary" dedicated and named "Our Lady in Tschengls".

Building

The building extends in an east-west direction and has a detached angular choir in the east . This has three windows at irregular intervals (one window was not possible because of the sacristy extension, one window opening is bricked up). The pointed spire is on the north side. It is covered with copper plates and has a tower clock on the east side . On the same side above the sound hole of the bells there is a painting of the Virgin Mary, above it the year 1922. Leaning against the tower is an extension. Which lies on the north side sacristy and next to a chapel in the Baroque style, which is, however, came later. It is painted with frescoes and decorated with cartouches . On the roof of this chapel sits a stone turret with glazed windows. Diagonally below is the Widum .

The vault of the nave and the choir are equipped with rib arches.

The portal and the two upper windows on this side are decorated with ornamental paintings. Above the portal is a rectangular wall niche with no longer recognizable painting and a raised cross, above it a painted cartouche with the letters RM (Regina Maria). Above this cartridge is a small hatch in the wall, above which there is a simple coat of arms with the Austrian colors.
