Albert Schweitzer - Anatomy of a Saint is an Austrian documentary film by the director Georg Misch . The film shows the person behind the public image of Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965), who at the time was virtually revered as a “saint” , apart from the popular image of the “greatest man in the world”.
action
In 1949 Albert Schweitzer and his wife Helene stayed in New York to collect donations for their hospital in Lambaréné (West Africa). This hospital is one of Schweitzer's life's works. He gives various lectures and organ concerts to finance the project. Schweitzer is celebrated in New York as a famous doctor and invited to many occasions. The request of his friend Albert Einstein , together with him and Robert Oppenheimer, to speak out publicly against atomic bomb tests, changes this situation suddenly, because these statements are a thorn in the side of the US authorities. From then on he is secretly followed, and it is even considered to take action against Schweitzer. This is followed by a "smear campaign" led by the CIA during the McCarthy period against Schweitzer to portray him as a communist because of his rejection of nuclear weapons .
Synopsis
Albert Schweitzer is pointedly referred to as the modern saint of the 20th century. He is considered a symbol of the jungle doctor, saved human lives in Africa, won the Nobel Peace Prize and founded the concept of "respect for life". He was a universal genius, a great theologian, philosopher, musician, doctor and aid worker, one of the forerunners of the environmental protection movement and a vehement opponent of nuclear weapons.
The film shows the person behind this image. It reveals the story of the bad pupil who turned into a genius and the influences that his two passions, nature and the music of J. S. Bach , had on his actions and thinking. Criticism of the Schweitzer also has its say, according to the reassessment of his development work, which is now heavily questioned.
