Albert Spethmann

Albert Spethmann (born July 27, 1894 in Altona near Hamburg , † December 24, 1986 in West Berlin ) was a German landscape , genre and portrait painter .

Life

Spethmann was the son of a woodcarver from Altona. His brothers were the sculptor Heinrich Spethmann (* 1885) and the painter and sculptor Karl Spethmann (1888–1944). After attending the Altona School of Applied Arts, Spethmann went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There was Willy Spatz his teacher. On October 31, 1913, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in painting. He visited Hugo von Habermann's master studio and then worked as a freelance painter. In 1921 he and his wife Marie Hobmeier, whom he had met in Dietramszell in 1920, moved into a house on Austraße in Bad Tölz , where he lived for 65 years. In 1950 he became a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative , and in 1971 an honorary member.

Spethmann was committed to realistic , naturalistic and late impressionistic painting. He was best known for motifs of the Isarwinkel and the Loisach valley . He painted views of Bad Tölz, rampant cottage gardens around Hechenberg , old workshops and courtyards, as well as portraits of locals. In 1917 he made his debut in an exhibition at the Glaspalast in Munich . With the landscape painting Jurafelsen he was represented at the Great German Art Exhibition in 1942 .
