Alberto José Gonçalves (born January 20, 1859 in Palmeira , Paraná , Brazil ; † March 6, 1945 ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Ribeirão Preto .

Life

Alberto José Gonçalves studied at the seminary in São Paulo and received on 17 September 1882, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On December 5, 1908, Pope Pius X appointed him first bishop of the diocese of Ribeirão Preto, which had been established six months earlier . The Archbishop of São Paulo , Leopoldo Duarte e Silva , donated him episcopal ordination on February 2 of the following year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Curitiba , João Francisco Braga , and the Bishop of Florianópolis , João Batista Becker .

In addition to his ecclesiastical career, Gonçalves was also active as a politician in Paraná after he had been elected to the constituent assembly of the new federal state after the republic was proclaimed. From 1893 to 1896 he was a member of the Assembleia Legislativa do Paraná and from 1896 to 1905 he represented his state in the Federal Senate .
