Evie, a twelve year old girl whose father is in a wheelchair, works in a horse sales stable. She also loves horses. On Christmas Day she finds a saddled Friesian stallion with stirrups hanging down in the forest . She gets on the strange stallion and falls over a tree trunk while jumping.
When she wakes up, she finds herself in the mystical world of Albion, where her homeland Vermont is unknown. It turns out that the black is a kelpie . Kelpies are water spirits that can take on both human and horse form. In Albion she learns of a conspiracy against the peaceful local population. She realizes that she is the key to saving this people.
