Albrecht Elzow

Albrecht Elzow († November 14, 1698 in Anklam ) was a German heraldist and genealogist . His “Pomeranian Adelsspiegel” was still a useful source for the history of the nobility in Pomerania in the 19th century .

Elzow belonged to the city council of Anklam, where he was council secretary in 1671 and chamberlain from 1672 . Albrecht Elzow collected genealogical news and extensive family tables on the history of the noble families of Pomerania. Most of the material came directly from the noble families. Elzow's death prevented the publication of the Pomeranian Adelsspiegel which he wrote . The knighthood of Upper Pomerania acquired part of the original manuscript for their territory from Elzow's widow for 100 thalers and kept it in the Ständehaus in Stettin. According to Johann Carl Conrad Oelrichs , the part of the manuscript covering the Western Pomerania region is said to have come to the Swedish Pomerania State Archives . However, the actual whereabouts are unknown. In the 19th century there are said to have been several copies with supplements. Today, the Stralsund City Archives and the Greifswald State Archives hold copies of the Nobility Review in the respective manuscript collections. It is unclear whether these are originals or copies. The two-volume Stralsund copy (Hs 418/419) could well be the above-mentioned copy about the West Pomeranian nobility, as it only deals with the West Pomeranian aristocratic families and larger parts of the West Pomeranian state archive, i.e. the archive of the estates, are kept there . The copies in the Greifswald State Archives (Rep. 40 III, No. 75, 76 and 77) deal with the nobility of Western Pomerania (No. 75, Vol. 1 and 2), the nobility of Pomerania (No. 76, Vol. 1 and 2) as well of the states of Bütow and Lauenburg (No. 77).

Excerpts from the manuscript were reproduced by Ludwig Wilhelm Brüggemann in his work "Detailed Description of Prussian Vor und Hinter-Pommern" (1779 and 1784) and by Julius Theodor Bagmihl in his " Pommerschen Wappenbuch " (1843–1855).
