Albrecht Weiland

Albrecht Weiland (born January 22, 1955 in Nieder-Roden ) is a German publisher ( Schnell und Steiner publishing house ) and Christian archaeologist .

Life

After taking the Abitur examination in June 1975 at the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium in Bamberg , he entered the Franciscan order as a novice , which he left again during the probationary period in February 1978. During the novitiate he had already started studying Catholic theology, Christian and classical archeology at the University of Freiburg , which he did in 1982 , interrupted by two semesters at the Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana and at the Gregoriana in Rome (1978–1979) graduated with a diploma. After graduation he worked from 1982 to 1986 as a research assistant to the rector Erwin Gatz the Teutonic Cemetery in Rome and in 1986 at the University of Freiburg with the church historical work "The Teutonic Cemetery in Rome and his grave monuments" Dr. theol. PhD. From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a research assistant at the Roman Institute of the Görres Society . From 1987 to 1989 he continued his studies at the Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana and graduated with a licentiate and the final exam for a doctorate in Christian archeology. Weiland was already active as a segretario (managing director) of this institute from 1988 to 1996 and qua general secretary of the preparatory committee of the international congresses for Christian archeology.

Since 1995 he has been a member of the advisory board of the magazine “das münster. Journal for Christian Art and Art History ” , he has been its editor since mid-1996.

In 1996 he returned to Germany to take over the management of the Schnell und Steiner publishing house in Regensburg . He has been its co-owner and managing partner since 2006 and sole owner since 2013. Over the past two decades, Weiland has developed a broadly based, internationally networked publishing program with a focus on art and cultural history. Since 2009, the publisher has been awarding the “Art and Ethos Culture Prize” every year on the day it was founded.

Weiland has been married to the Christian archaeologist Jutta Dresken-Weiland since 1990 and the couple has two children.

Social and political engagement

During his student days he was chairman (spokesman) of the student council of the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg from 1977 to 1978.

Since 1982 he has been a member of the Görres Society for the Care of Science, since 1996 in the advisory board and since 2017 in the budget committee.

In 1983 he joined the Arch-Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows at Campo Santo Teutonico and was involved on the board of directors and on the administrative board from 1984 until he left Rome in 1996.

Since 1987 he has been a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Awards

  • In 1989 he was one of the youngest recipients of the Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria .
  • In 1996 he received the Medal of Honor from the Arch-Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows at Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome.
  • In 2003 he was made an honorary member of the Arch-Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows at Campo Santo Teutonico.
  • In 2007 he received the Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
  • In 2016, Weiland received the "Lumen ex libris." Award for the Schnell & Steiner publishing house in Pordenone . Premio Internazionale all'Editoria Religiosa “of the Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
