The Alcova dam ( English Alcova Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in Natrona County , Wyoming , USA . It dams the North Platte River to a reservoir ( English Alcova Reservoir ). The dam is located approximately 16 km (10  miles ) downstream from Pathfinder Dam and approximately 48 km (30 miles) southwest of the town of Casper .

Construction of the dam began in August 1935. It was completed in 1937. The dam was originally only used for irrigation. It was decided in 1950 to build the associated hydroelectric plant. It was completed in 1955. The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is an earth embankment dam with a height of 80 m (265  ft ) above the foundation level . The dam crest is 1679 m (5510 ft) above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 232.5 m (763 ft). The volume of the structure is 1.25 million m³ (1.635 million  cubic yards ). The flood relief is on the left side of the dam. A maximum of 1557 m³ / s (55,000 cft / s) can be discharged via them  .

The construction costs of the dam were 20 million USD .

Reservoir

At the normal storage target of 1676 m (5500 ft), the reservoir extends over an area of around 10 km² (2470  acres ) and holds 227.45 million m³ (184,405 acre-feet ) of water; 37.75 million m³ (30.606 acre-feet) of this can be used for irrigation purposes.

An irrigation canal ( English Casper Canal ) goes from the reservoir , which runs on the left (northern) side of the river towards the city of Casper . The target of the reservoir is kept relatively constant in order to be able to supply the canal with sufficient water at all times.

power plant

The power plant is located at the foot of the dam on the right side of the river. The installed capacity is 41.4  MW . The installed capacity was originally 36 MW. The average annual generation is 88 (or more than 100) million  kWh . The power plant's two Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 18 (or 20.7) MW. The fall height is 50 m (165 ft).
