The Gmina Bełżec [ ˈbɛwʒɛts ] is a rural municipality in the powiat Tomaszowski of the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland . Its seat is the village of the same name with about 2600 inhabitants (2011).

In Belzec extermination camp about 434,000 people were murdered 1942 and 1943. The museum and memorial are located near Bełżec.

geography

The rural community is located about 110 km southeast of Lublin and five kilometers south of Tomaszów Lubelski near the border with Ukraine . The municipality has an area of ​​28.66 km². 56% of the municipal area is used for agriculture, 34% is covered with forest.

The Chełm - Lemberg railway line and Droga krajowa 17 run through Bełżec .

history

Bełżec was the municipality seat until 1972, then became part of the Tomaszów Lubelski municipality and in 1992 received the municipality seat back. From 1975 to 1998 the rural community belonged to the Zamość Voivodeship .
