Training and theater work

Alec Secăreanu was born as Alexandru Secăreanu in Bucharest. He completed an acting degree at the National University for Theater and Film Arts "IL Caragiale" (UNATC) there, which he graduated in 2007. Thereupon Secăreanu began to appear as a theater actor both on independent stages and in pieces of state theaters, including the National Theater in Bucharest . In addition to appearances at theater festivals in Bucharest, Hermannstadt , Timișoara , Brăila and Piatra Neamț , he also went on guest tours through Europe.

In 2014, Secăreanu worked with Alexandra Pirici for a month-long installation at the Biennale di Venezia .

Secăreanu gained greater fame in late 2015 with the lead role of Tyler Durden in the EUR 60,000 independent theater production Fight Club , directed by Ilinca Radulian . The Bucharest production of Les Ateliers Nomades , which he helped initiate, adapted Chuck Palahniuk 's novel of the same name for the stage.

Roles in film and television

While working at the theater, Alec Secăreanu appeared in Romanian television series from the mid-2000s and took on roles in short films. According to his own account, Secăreanu learned a lot while filming the short film Casting Call by Conrad Mericoffer, on which he worked with the well-known Romanian actor Victor Rebengiuc , whom he admires together with Marcel Iureș . From 2014 he shortened his first name from Alexandru to "Alec". In 2016, Secăreanu was represented with small roles in the British film The Chosen - Heroes of the Resistance by Jasmin Dizdar and the US television film The Saint by Simon West .

International fame brought Secăreanu his first leading role in a cinema in 2017 in Francis Lee's God’s Own Country . In the award-winning drama he was seen as the Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe, who begins an affair with a sheep farmer of the same age (played by Josh O'Connor ) on a farm in Yorkshire, England . Director Lee had insisted on the casting of a Romanian actor in the role of Gheorghe, whereupon Secăreanu was invited as one of three possible actors to one and a half month rehearsals with screen partner O'Connor in London . After he was accepted for the role, two more weeks of rehearsals followed before filming. "The two-week rehearsals helped me to build up the figure because I had to work on the farm, I learned to work with cows and sheep, watch the birth of lambs, cut sheep's hooves, make cheese [...]", says Secăreanu. His appearance in God's Own Country earned him a London agent, membership of the British actors' union and a nomination for the British Independent Film Award .

Alec Secăreanu lives in Bucharest. Parallel to his work as an actor, he worked sporadically as a casting assistant and was involved in the production of Romanian short films.
