Aleksander Ścibor-Rylski (born March 16, 1928 in Grudziądz , † April 3, 1983 in Warsaw ) was a Polish writer , screenwriter and director .

Life

During the Second World War and the German occupation of Poland , the young Ścibor-Rylski was a soldier in the Polish Home Army ( Armia Krajowa - AK) and a member of the underground scout organization ( Szare Szeregi ). In 1944 he took part in the Warsaw Uprising .

After the end of the war he studied Polish studies at the University of Warsaw ; he completed his studies in 1951. As early as 1946, at the age of 18, he had his first publications as a writer. His novel Węgiel ( Coal , 1950) has been translated into several languages. However, he primarily worked as a screenwriter. From 1955 to 1965 he was director of the film art group Rytm , from 1972 to 1978 of the Pryzmat group .

His three collaborations with Andrzej Wajda ( Legionnaires , 1965; The Marble Man , 1976; The Iron Man , 1981) received special international attention ; all three films ran in the competition for the Palme d'Or in Cannes , which the third (also Ścibor-Rylski's last film) finally won.

His posthumously published novel Pierścionek z końskiego włosia was filmed in 1992 by Wajda under the title Love Between the Fronts ( Pierścionek z orłem w koronie ).
