Aleksander Geržina (born July 19, 1966 in Maribor ) is a Slovenian politician and diplomat and was ambassador to Austria from 2009 to 2013 .

Aleksander Geržina was born in Maribor (Marburg) in 1966. He studied history at the University of Ljubljana and completed post-graduate courses at the Royal United Services Institute  (RUSI) in London, the University of Berlin and Columbia University .

In 1992 he joined the diplomatic service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana. First use was in the Office of the Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1993 he was an attaché at the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York . In 1994 he returned to the Department of State for Europe and North America.

From 1994 to 1996 he was deputy head of cabinet , parliamentary secretary to the minister and member of the negotiating group for Slovenia's accession to the EU , and from February to June 1996 he was acting head of cabinet. Geržina then moved back to the Foreign Service, from 1996 to 1998 he was 1st Embassy Secretary at the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels , 1997 Deputy Permanent Representative at the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) in The Hague , and from 1998 until 2000 Deputy Head of Mission at the Permanent Mission to NATO and Deputy Permanent Representative to the Council of the Western European Union  (WEU) in Brussels.

In 2000 he became State Secretary (EU Department), in 2002 Authorized Representative to the EU , and as such also Slovenian representative in the Political and Security Committee . In 2004, when Slovenia joined the EU , he became an authorized representative in Department II.1. for neighboring countries as head of the department for Croatia and also project leader of the working group for the Slovenian Presidency of the OSCE . In 2006 he became deputy head of the EU department and project manager of the working group for the Slovenian EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008.

In 2008 Geržina became a representative in Cyprus . In June 2009 he moved to the embassy in Vienna. The occupation had been vacant for over a year.

Aleksander Geržina is married and has one son.
