The Aleksandr Suvorov ( Russian Александр Суворов , dt. Alexander Suvorov) is a river cruise ship that in 1981 in Czechoslovakia in the shipyard Narodny Podnik Škoda in Komarno (now Slovenské Lodenice Komárno, at that time part of the Škoda Group was built) and Valerian Kuybyshev class (project 92-016 / OL400) (for 400 passengers). It is operated by Vodohod - Saint Petersburg on the Neva , Lake Ladoga and the Volga-Baltic Canal on the Saint Petersburg - Valaam route. For 2011 cruises are also planned from Saint Petersburg to Petrozavodsk via Mandrogi and Kizhi . The ship bears the name of the famous Russian generalissimo Alexander Suvorov .

description

The river cruise ship with four passenger decks was built in 1981 by the Slovak shipyard Narodny Podnik Škoda in Komárno (today Slovenské Lodenice Komárno, at that time part of the Škoda Group ) as Aleksandr Suvorov for the shipping company Volgo-Donskoje Parochodstwo ( Volga-Don shipping company ) in Rostov-on-Don built. She belonged to a series of 9 ships of the type "Valerian Kuybyshev", which was also manufactured from 1976 to 1983, which was also known as "Project 92-016" or "OL400" (Slovak: osobna lod 400 - German: for 400 passengers). The Aleksandr Suvorov has a diesel-electric drive with three main engines, each 736 kW. It was operated from 1982 to 1983 on the Volga on the Rostov-on-Don – Moscow cruise route . On June 5, 1983 at 10:35 p.m., the Aleksandr Suvorov, fully laden, hit the truss and the half-timbered construction of the non-navigable field of the then only 2,200 m long railway bridge (now the Imperator Bridge) over the Volga near Ulyanovsk and for reasons that are still unexplained not against a bridge pillar, as it is sometimes reported. The collision happened in the evening when most of the travelers were on the upper deck on the dance floor with loud music and a speed of 25 km / h. Both the wheelhouse, the upper deck and the chimney were torn off by the collision. Wagons loaded with coal and wood fell onto the ship from the railway bridge, which was just being crossed by a freight train. 176 people were killed, but the passengers in the cabins hardly noticed the incident. The badly damaged Aleksandr Suvorov drove another 300 meters before she came to a stop. The truss construction of the bridge was shifted by 30 centimeters as a result of the collision. Instead of rescuing passengers at the bridge pier, the captain was found wearing swimming pants and was sentenced to ten years in prison after the accident and released after just six years. However, he died in 1990 of a heart attack caused by remorse .
