biography

In 1884 Backhaus began studying agriculture in Halle and Leipzig , which he completed with a doctorate in 1888 under Wilhelm Roscher . After an assistantship in Halle, he managed the Hessian estate Rudlos and built an agricultural school there . From 1891 he had a professorship in Göttingen. From 1896/97 he represented Wilhelm Fleischmann's chair of agriculture at the Albertus University in Königsberg and in 1900 became director of the agricultural institute for which he acquired the Quednau experimental estate . Since 1898 he was in conflict with the Chamber of Agriculture in East Prussia because he assessed the grain cultivation there as in need of reform. In 1903 he received a disciplinary reprimand and left the apprenticeship in 1904 at his own request. From 1904 to 1906 he was in charge of the municipal sewage fields in Berlin . From 1906 to 1911 he taught agriculture in Montevideo at the agricultural college which he founded and was commissioned by the State of Uruguay to set up agricultural research stations. In Königsberg he was first removed from office in 1912, then rehabilitated after an examination. He received a professorship at the Albertina. From 1915 to 1918 he worked for the Prussian Ministry of War (procurement of fat, extraction of protein-rich foods). At his own request, he resigned from the service at the end of 1918 and in 1919 became head of the teaching center in Vorder Bollhagen near Bad Doberan .

Backhaus invented and sold an artificial breast milk, the Backhausmilch , since 1898 .

Backhaus ran for the National Liberals in the Reichstag election in 1893 , and from 1918 he was a member of the DVP , where he was involved in agricultural policy.

Backhaus had done his military service in Darmstadt . As a reserve officer , an honorary court case was initiated against him in 1905, which led to his dismissal as a simple soldier. In 1911 he was rehabilitated. After voluntarily reporting, he joined the War Ministry in 1915/16, resigned from the military in 1916, but remained head of grain disinfection in the war food industry.
