Alexander Unterberger
Alexander Martin Unterberger ( Russian Александр Унтербергер ; * July 11, 1827 in Riga ; † October 28, 1875 in Dorpat ) was a veterinarian , Russian State Councilor and, together with his brother Friedrich Unterberger (1810-1884), the founder of veterinary medicine in the Russian Empire .
Life
The High School put Alexander on Gouvernementsgymnasium in Riga from, after which he attended the school in Bergmann Lasdohn (Livonia). He studied veterinary medicine in Berlin and graduated as a veterinarian. Afterwards he worked at the veterinary school in Dorpat and from 1857 he was employed as senior veterinarian (oldest veterinarian) at the Domainhof in Riga. In 1862 he was appointed Master of Veterinary Medicine and from 1859 to 1862 he was first associate professor and then full professor at the veterinary school, from 1873 institute in Dorpat. He was appointed to the Russian State Council and after the death of Professor Peter Jessen his successor as clinic director and head of the veterinary institute in Dorpat.
Works
In addition to the dissertation , Unterberger published a book with the title: "Some comments on the progress, development and condition of the veterinary part in Austria, Bavaria and Saxony" (Dorpat, 1865), as well as a number of articles in the Baltic Weekly for Agriculture, Gewerbefleiß und Handel , the Dorpati newspaper , the Wiener Vierteljahresschrift and in other magazines.
Origin and family
Alexander U. came from the Unterberger family in Salzburg , who had lived in Riga since the end of the 18th century . His father was the wagon builder , blacksmith and gunsmith Simon Thomas Unterberger († February 20, 1841 in Riga) from Stallupönen in East Prussia , who had been docker of the Small Guild in Riga since 1829 . Simon was married to Wilhelmine Rachow. In 1852 Alexander married Kunigunde von Hirschheydt in Riga . Their son was Alexander Magnus Unterberger (1855-1896). His cousin was Paul Simon Unterberger (1842 - 1921), who served as general and governor of the Russian Empire.
