Crimean crisis

Witko played a key role in the events of the Crimean crisis . On March 3, 2014, he issued an ultimatum to the Ukrainian military demanding that they surrender by 5 a.m. on March 4, 2014, otherwise the military units of the Ukrainian armed forces would be stormed across Crimea . On March 5, 2014, the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation against him on charges of inciting treason and organizing sabotage. The Russian Defense Ministry described this act as a provocation aimed at destabilizing the situation in Crimea. Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov remarked on March 12, 2014 that "the commander of the Black Sea Fleet is fulfilling his duty on a legal basis, in strict accordance with the current Russian-Ukrainian agreement on the stationing of the Russian fleet on the territory of Ukraine".

In March 2014, the foreign ministers of the European Union imposed sanctions on 21 Ukrainian and Russian people who, in their opinion, were responsible for the referendum on the status of Crimea on March 16, 2014 . Entry bans and account freezes were imposed on this group of people, to which Witko also belongs.
