Alexander Wilhelm de Beauclair (born July 10, 1877 in Darmstadt ; died October 31, 1962 in Ascona ) was a German painter, poet and publisher who went to Ascona in 1906 and lived in the Monte Verità colony there. His painting consists mainly of realistic portraits and landscapes.

Life

De Beauclair came from a Huguenot family from Darmstadt, his father was a civil servant. He was a student of Caspar Ritter in Karlsruhe, Joseph Scheurenberg in Berlin and Franz von Defregger in Munich. On November 2, 1898, he began an academic training as a painter in the nature class of Johann Caspar Herterich at the art academy in Munich . At the end of the 19th century, de Beauclair traveled through Italy, Croatia and Austria-Hungary. During this time he lived from the drawings he made of rich citizens. In Florence he copied the works of well-known masters exhibited there. Around 1900 he became a teacher at a secondary school in Darmstadt and head of a painting school. In 1906 he came to Ascona and visited the intellectual meeting place Monte Verità. There he made the acquaintance of Henri Oedenkoven , the co-founder of the colony, and was briefly managing director of the local vegetarian pension and secretary of Oedenkovens.

In 1908 de Beauclair co-founded the German-language newspaper Südschweiz , which still appears today as the Ticino newspaper . Together with his first wife, the painter Friederike Krüger , whom he married in 1906, he ran a painting school in Ascona. However, the relationship was not harmonious, because Friederike had to look after the painting students in addition to the household. Therefore, she left Ascona with her sons Gotthard and Wilfried in 1920 and went back to Germany. De Beauclair then married the Dutch Nelltye Bersma and had with her the daughters Henrike Rogantini de Beauclair, called Hetty (1928-2018), who later looked after the Monte Verità Museum, and Liliane (1931-1945). During that time, de Beauclair lived from various activities. From 1944 until his death in 1962, he worked as a secretary, property manager and tour guide. He worked as a journalist for the Ascona holiday journal and the Cronaca d'Ascona (Chronicle Ascona). De Beauclair lived on Monte Verità in the Casa Monescia , which still exists today and is used as a hotel.
