Alexandru Teodor Balaban (born April 2, 1931 in Reșița ) is a Romanian chemist . He is known for his contribution to chemical graph theory .

Life

Balaban was born in Reșița and moved with his parents to the Romanian capital Bucharest in 1935 . After the war ended, the family settled in Petroşani , where Balaban attended high school for four years. From 1949 to 1956 he studied industrial chemistry at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest , where he was taught organic chemistry by Costin D. Nenițescu (1902–1970) . In 1955 Balaban married a former fellow student who was working as a researcher at a chemical institute and with whom he had a son in 1958 and a daughter in 1966.

In parallel to his work as assistant professor in the department of organic chemistry of Costin D. Nenițescu, Balaban worked from 1956 in the newly founded institute for atomic physics near Bucharest. In 1963 he was the second youngest scientist in the almost hundred-year history of the Romanian Academy to be appointed a corresponding member of this forum. After several publications in international journals, Balaban received the offer in 1967 to work as a researcher in the chemistry department of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna for three years. In 1971 he returned to the Polytechnic University of Bucharest as Professor of Organic Chemistry after Margareta Avram had taken over the chair from Costin D. Nenițescu, who died in the summer of 1970. Until 1989 Balaban published numerous writings as a co-author and was allowed to participate in several international conferences.

In 1989 he received an invitation for six months as a guest lecturer at the University of Leipzig , but after two months he had to return to Romania with his wife and was only able to continue the collaboration in 1990 after the fall of the Wall . In 1991, Balaban was appointed to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for three months , followed by three months at Texas A&M University in Galveston . In 1994 the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society honored him with the Herman Skolnik Award.

From 1995 to 1998 Balaban was one of the four vice presidents of the Romanian Academy. He then returned to Texas A&M University in Galveston and in 2001, at the age of 70, received a tenure as a professor. In 2001 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences made him an honorary member and from 2005 to 2007 he was the first president of the International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry, which was newly founded in Dubrovnik . Between 2006 and 2010, Balaban spent a few months of the year in Slovenia , where he was involved in research into environmental problems at the University of Ljubljana .
