Alexei Wladimirowitsch Jablokow ( Russian Алексей Владимирович Яблоков , English transcription Alexey V. Yablokov; born October 3, 1933 in Moscow ; † January 10, 2017 ibid) was a Russian biologist and environmental politician . He was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a member of the board of the Russian Center for Ecological Policy.

Life

At the time of perestroika , Yablokow founded the Soviet branch of Greenpeace in 1988 and remained its chairman until 1991. From 1989 to 1997 he was environmental advisor to Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin in various offices . In 1993, the scientific report known as the Yablokow Report was published, which was prepared by 46 experts under the direction of Alexei Yablokow. The report documents the dumping of nuclear waste, in particular numerous nuclear reactors, in the sea. It sparked an international debate about the disposal of nuclear waste from the Russian fleet.

In 2005, Yablokow founded the Union of Greens in Russia and became its chairman. After its dissolution a year later, he joined the Yabloko party and became chairman of the new Green Russia faction .

He was a member of the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP) in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) for the protection of the gray whale . A study published in 2007 and translated into English in 2009, which he co-authored with Vasily and Alexei Nesterenko, caused a sensation, in which it was estimated that almost one million people died prematurely as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster .

Honors

Alexei Yablokow received the gold medal of the WWF in 2000 and, together with Fran Macy, the Nuclear-Free Future Award in 2002 . He has been an honorary doctorate from the University of Brussels since 1995 and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996 . In 1996 he received the Busk Medal from the Royal Geographical Society .
