Alfred E. von Overbeck

Alfred Eugène von Overbeck (born March 8, 1925 in Bern ; † April 7, 2016 in Saint-Prex , Canton of Valais ) was a Swiss legal scholar .

Live and act

Overbeck was the son of the Freiburg legal scholar Alfred von Overbeck and the grandson of Gustav Overbeck . From 1944 to 1948 he studied law at the universities of Zurich , Freiburg and Paris. In 1948 he received the license en droit from the University of Freiburg and in 1952 the brevet d'avocat , admission to the bar . After a study trip to the USA, his grandmother's homeland, he became secretary in the permanent office of the Hague Conference on Private International Law in 1956 .

In 1961 he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. In 1962 he was a lecturer at the University of Zurich. In 1965 he became associate professor and in 1968, as successor to Max Gutzwiller, full professor for international private law at the University of Freiburg, from 1971 to 1975 he was its rector. In 1980 he was appointed by the Swiss Federal Council as the first director of the newly founded Swiss Institute for Comparative Law in Lausanne , which he headed from 1982 until his retirement in 1990.

He was a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , member of the Netherlands Academy of Sciences, honorary member of the Asociación española de profesores de derecho internacional y relaciones internacionales , the Institut de Droit international and the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.
