Max Gutzwiller

Max Gutzwiller (born October 1, 1889 in Basel , † February 6, 1989 in Murten , Catholic , resident in Therwil and Basel) was a Swiss lawyer .

Life

Max Gutzwiller was born on October 1, 1889 in Basel as the son of the banker Carl Gutzwiller and the women's rights activist Emilie Gutzwiller-Meyer . Gutzwiller studied law at the universities of Basel , Freiburg , Berlin from 1908 and Bonn from 1911 , which he completed there with the academic degree of Dr. iur. completed.

As a result, he held the chair for Roman law from 1921 to 1926 and 1937 to 1956 and that of international private law at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland from 1925 to 1926 and 1937 to 1956. In addition, he worked from 1926 to 1936 as a full professor for German private law and Roman law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg . In 1946 Gutzwiller founded the series "Works from the Law Department of the University of Freiburg" , with the short form (AISUF). In addition, from 1949 to 1970 he was editor and publisher of the Zeitschrift für Schweizerisches Recht .

Max Gutzwiller's first marriage in 1921 was the German citizen Gisela née Strassmann, and her second marriage was the Lucerne- born Anne Marie née Meyer. He died on February 6, 1989 at the age of 99 in Murten.

Act

During his academic career, Max Gutzwiller taught Roman law in French and German. He found particular recognition in the field of international law. Gutzwiller belonged to the Association for International Law and presided over the Lucerne Conference in 1952. In 1951 and 1956 he represented Switzerland at the sessions of the Hague Conference on Private International Law . In 1947 he was accepted as a member of the Institut de Droit international .

Max Gutzwiller is considered to be one of the intellectual fathers of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods from 1980. In 1959 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam .
