His father was already a player in SK Sturm Graz in the 1920s, with the right winger being the crowd favorite when attacking with players like Sinkovic, Oroszy, Dellinger or Waldhauser. The team around his father ensured the first Styrian championship title in the 1920/21 season; the legendary storm spirit was born. Alfred Gerth, the eldest of three sons, grew up in the Steyrergasse in Graz and spent a lot of time in the Augarten and at the side of his father on the Sturmplatz . In Graz he attended elementary school as well as secondary school and entered the service of the Graz Puchwerke in 1935 as a commercial apprentice . Franz Krisper , defender at SK Sturm Graz and a club legend, was his first teacher. Three years later, on December 15, 1938, his brother Fritz, who would later become a banker and Graz councilor, who also supported the cashier of SK Sturm Graz in their work for many years, was born. Alfred Gerth was shortly before the end of his apprenticeship at the company, to which he subsequently remained loyal for almost 50 years. The development of the Puch works is closely linked to the name Gerth to this day.

After completing his apprenticeship, he joined his main factory as an industrial worker, but in 1941 he had to take up military service in World War II . Here he came, among other things, into American captivity and returned to his company as an employee after his release. Even before his military service, Alfred Gerth had been active at the side of Hans Schabus in the Sturm-Jugend and from the beginning of the war he also played in the first fighting team of the Grazer, before the football game was abruptly broken off when he was enlisted in military service. Due to his political interest, he stood for election as shop steward in the employee works council and was subsequently elected in this very same place. In 1959, he was posted to the central works council of Steyr Daimler Puch AG. Furthermore, he was appointed a member of the examination commission for commercial apprentices at the Graz Chamber of Commerce and was elected in 1961 as the salaried manager of the largest industrial company in Graz. The Mercury Insurance overtook him as chairman of the Test and Control to its supervisory board and in 1964 was made Gerths election as Councilor , where he worked as such in the AK Styria in the economic committee.

He was also a deputy member of the board of directors of the Styrian Regional Health Insurance Fund and, as such, has a significant influence on the expansion of medical care for the population. In 1974 Gerth was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria for his many years of extremely meritorious work . Six years later he received the Golden Decoration of Honor of the State of Styria and another ten years later, on November 29, 1990, he was named “ Citizen of the City of Graz ”. After his retirement, Alfred Gerth was the first district chairman of the 5th Graz district of Gries for several years . The Gerth family stayed with their parent club, SK Sturm Graz, for decades. While father Franz acted as a youth leader for years after his active football career, the sons Alfred, Herbert (already deceased) and Fritz volunteered for the sports club. Alfred Gerth was active in the fan club of SK Sturm Graz for forty years and during this time he was vice-president of the fan club for decades. Furthermore, the three brothers were cousins of the late Sturm President Hans Gert , who was written without a mute h due to a typing error in the baptismal certificate .

On September 12, 2017, Alfred Gerth died at the age of 96 in his birthplace and hometown Graz, leaving behind his wife Maria, his daughter Susanne, his brother Fritz with family and his sister-in-law Nora, Herbert's widow, with family.
