Alfred Klaar (born November 7, 1848 in Prague , Austrian Empire ; died November 4, 1927 in Berlin ; original name Aaron Karpeles ) was an Austrian literary historian , journalist and writer .

Life

Alfred Klaar came from a Jewish family; he was baptized a Catholic in 1887. In Prague he became a “literary pope” over the years, but is almost forgotten today. With his "objective criticism" he was an opponent of Alfred Kerr .

From 1868 to 1872 he was editor of the daily messenger from Bohemia , since 1873 theater and art critic of Prague's Bohemia , since 1885 also lecturer in literary history at the German Technical University in Prague and professor there since 1898 (he had received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1886).

In 1899 he moved to Berlin, where he was head of the features section of the Berliner Neuesten Nachrichten , from 1901 to 1912 he was a theater advisor at the Vossische Zeitung in Berlin, and at times also head of the feature section there. He was also a lecturer at the Technical University of Charlottenburg and employee of the Neue Freie Presse . He was chairman of the Association of Berlin Theater Critics, which was founded in December 1913.

Alfred Klaar was married to the actress Paula Eberty for the second time .
