Alfred Morel-Fatio

Alfred Morel-Fatio (born January 9, 1850 in Strasbourg , † October 9, 1924 in Versailles ) was a French Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Morel-Fatio, who lost his mother when he was eight and his father when he was sixteen, grew up in Lausanne and learned German in Leipzig. From 1869 to 1874 he went through the École nationale des chartes in Paris (where he was influenced by Paul Meyer , Gaston had Paris as a friend and published early in the journal Romania ). He fought in the Franco-Prussian War and graduated with the thesis Recherches sur le texte et les sources du "Libro de Alexandre" (in: Romania 4, 1875).

From 1875 to 1880 he worked in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (which sent him to Madrid with a research assignment), from 1880 to 1885 he officially taught at the École supérieure des lettres in Algiers , but due to the lack of students, he did a lot of research in Catalonia . From 1885 to 1907 he was secretary (managing director) of the École nationale des chartes (headed by Paul Meyer), at the same time he taught at the École pratique des hautes études first “Grammaire du latin décadent”, from 1892 “Littérature castillane” until his death et Italienne ".

From 1895 he permanently represented Paul Meyer's chair at the Collège de France , which he had already held sporadically since 1885 and where he was the official successor of the subject "Langues et littératures de l'Europe méridionale" (before especially Ibero-Romance studies), but was represented towards the end by his student Jean-Joseph Saroïhandy (1867-1932).

In 1910 he was elected (successor to Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville ) to the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (successor: Camille Enlart (1862-1927)).

Morel-Fatio, who lived unmarried in Versailles, died on the way to the academy meeting on the corner of the Rue Royale and the Rue de l'Orangerie.

Morel-Fatio was one of the founders of the Hispanic Bulletin in 1899 with Ernest Mérimée (1846–1924) and Georges Cirot (1870–1946) . He was the first chairman of the Agrégation for Spanish and Italian founded in 1900 .

Morel-Fatio was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española , a knight in the Order of Charles III. and officer of the Legion of Honor .
