Alfred Prince

Alfred Prinz (born June 4, 1930 in Vienna ; † September 20, 2014 there ) was an Austrian clarinetist, composer and university teacher. He was professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and from 1945 to 1995 clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic .

Life

Alfred Prinz studied clarinet from 1939 to 1947 at what was then the Vienna Music Academy with the clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic Leopold Wlach (1902–1956). From 1942 to 1949 he studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer , later also composition with Alfred Uhl and conducting with Hans Swarowsky .

In 1945, at the age of fifteen, he was accepted as the youngest ever engaged in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera as a clarinetist. After the opera building was destroyed in a bombing raid in March 1945, until it reopened in 1955, the Volksoper , among other things , was used, the official name at that time was the State Opera in the Volksoper . In 1956 he was accepted into the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic. From 1955 to 1983 he was principal clarinet with the Vienna Philharmonic, and in September 1995 he retired.

In 1972 he was appointed to the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and from 1978 he led a class in the clarinet concert field as a full professor. His students included Peter Hosek, Josias Just and Ewald Ivanschitz , among others . From 1996 to 1999 he was visiting professor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington (USA). Prinz also gave master classes at the Mozarteum Salzburg and at universities in Finland, Italy, Japan, Switzerland and the United States.

From 1945 to 1995 he composed over 90 works for various instrumentation, including several symphonies, solo concerts, pieces for piano, chamber music and songs.

Prinz died on September 20, 2014 at the age of 84 in Vienna.
