Alfred Schirokauer

Alfred Schirokauer (born July 13, 1880 in Breslau , † October 27, 1934 in Vienna ) was a German writer , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Schirokauer received his school education in England, where he gained his first directing experience as an amateur. Then he went to Hamburg and graduated from high school there. He then studied law and completed his studies with a doctorate. After a period as a trainee lawyer, Schirokauer worked as a lawyer for seven years.

At this time he began his writing activity. In 1904 he published his first novel Ilse Isensee . Numerous other works followed, some of which were filmed, including Impossible Love , starring Asta Nielsen in the lead role in 1932 . He wrote fictional biographies on Ferdinand Lassalle , Lord Byron , Napoleon and Lucretia Borgia as well as historical and contemporary novels.

Since 1912 Schirokauer has also frequently written scripts, initially regularly for Moeve-Film in Munich and Emelka, which is also based in Munich . In the 1920s he was one of the most active German screenwriters. He cooperated several times with Reinhold Schünzel . At times he was chairman of the Association of German Film Authors. Occasionally he directed it himself. After the “ seizure of power ” by the National Socialists, the Schirokauer of Jewish origin emigrated to the Netherlands and then to Vienna.
