Alfred Zimmer (medic)

Alfred Zimmer (born March 2, 1923 in Neisse / Upper Silesia ; † March 24, 2008 in Türkenfeld / Lower Bavaria ) was a German doctor and medical officer in the Bundeswehr .

Life

Zimmer joined the Wehrmacht in 1940 as a medical officer candidate . During the Second World War he had already served in France and Russia before he was transferred to the Military Medical Academy in Berlin . He completed his studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and the University of Strasbourg . In May 1944 he was promoted to field doctor and was subsequently deployed in France and then as a combat group doctor in the Rhineland. After the end of the war, he was taken prisoner by the US and was able to continue studying human medicine after his release in 1946. After successfully passing the state examination in 1949 and obtaining his license to practice medicine the following year, he worked in various clinical positions before joining the newly established Bundeswehr in September 1956. In the rank of medical officer , he was briefly deployed to the host organization and then as a troop doctor , then as a company commander of an airborne medical company, as a brigade doctor , deputy corps medical officer and division doctor . In his last military service he was a general doctor from February 1, 1973 until his discharge in July 1976, commander of the Academy of Medical and Health Services of the Bundeswehr in Munich .
