Alfred von Görtz-Wrisberg

Alfred von Görtz-Wrisberg , in the USA Alfred G. Wrisberg and Alfred Wriesberg (born February 16, 1814 in Hildesheim , † December 29, 1868 in Dubuque , Iowa, USA) was a German officer and politician. During the revolution of 1848/1849 he was the military commander of Freiburg im Breisgau and Koblenz . After the failure of the revolution, he first emigrated to Switzerland and then to the USA as a so-called Forty-Eighter .

Life

Alfred von Görtz-Wrisberg came from the dynasty of the Imperial Count von Schlitz called von Görtz ; his brother was the future Minister of State Hermann von Görtz-Wrisberg, Brunswick . Little is known about his youth and early adulthood. He embarked on a career as an officer and was last Prussian prime lieutenant and adjutant before the 1848 revolution.

In 1849 he was involved in the uprising in Baden and became military commander in Freiburg im Breisgau and Constance .

After the failure of the revolution, he fled to Switzerland in July 1849. He then emigrated to the USA, where he carried out various professional activities from 1851 (?) And lived in Monroe (Wisconsin) . For a while he was Town Clerk in neighboring Clarno.

At the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861/62 he was a lieutenant colonel in the 9th Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin , in 1865 he became a captain in the 2nd Infantry Regiment of Iowa.

After the war ended in 1865, he settled in Dubuque, Iowa , and opened a private school there. In autumn 1868 he was elected justice of the peace . His life ended by suicide in December of the same year .
