The city and county are known across the country for their cheese products. The city is nicknamed the Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA . In the 40s of the 19th century , the first Swiss arrived in the area and produced Swiss cheese. The Cheese Days have been held every year since 1914 .

Monroe is located in lush, rolling hills in southern Wisconsin, 7 miles north of the Illinois border . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and lies 90.6 km to the west.

The Wisconsin State Highways 11 and 81 run on a common route section as the northern bypass around Monroe until the WIS 81 in the northwest of the city leaves the common route section in a northerly direction. The Wisconsin State Highway 59 reaches at the junction with the northern bypass its western terminus.
