Algirdas Paleckis (born May 20, 1971 in Bern , Switzerland ) is a former Lithuanian socialist politician , leader of the socialist party Socialistinis liaudies frontas , diplomat and journalist .

Life

Paleckis is the son of the diplomat Justas Vincas Paleckis and grandson of the Soviet-Lithuanian politician Justas Paleckis (1899–1980). After graduating from high school in Naujamiestis (now Jonas Basanavičius Middle School ), he studied journalism at Vilnius University from 1989 to 1994 and international relations in Paris from 1994 to 1995 .

Since 1994 Paleckis worked in the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . From 1997 to 2001 he was a diplomat in the Lithuanian diplomatic mission to the EU in Brussels , where he was responsible for culture, press, education and science. In 2001 he became Head of Division for Western European Countries in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2003 he was an advisor to the vice-chairman of the Seimas . From November 15, 2004 to April 14, 2007 he was a member of the Lithuanian Seimas.

Since 2007 he has been a member of the Vilnius City Council and Deputy Mayor of Vilnius . On January 15, 2008, he was expelled from the LSDP and had to resign from the office of deputy mayor. In summer 2008 Paleckis founded the party " Frontas ", which unsuccessfully participated in the elections for the Seimas in autumn 2008. From January 28, 2009 he was assistant to the director of “Vilniaus kapitalinė statyba” (100 percent of the shares belong to the city of Vilnius). Now he works in a PR agency and as the head of the community in Antakalnis .

Paleckis is married and has two children.

Legal proceedings

In 2011, the Vilnius Public Prosecutor launched an investigation against Paleckis for denying Soviet aggression against Lithuania. Paleckis had claimed that during the events of the Vilnius Bloody Sunday , Lithuanian snipers and not members of the Russian OMON units fired into the crowd. He was initially acquitted in January 2012, but sentenced to a fine of 10,400 litas in July 2012. The judgment was finally upheld by the Supreme Court of Lithuania on January 22, 2013 .
